Then walked into a brand-new home that already felt dated?
It happens!!
Most people assume timeless homes are created by choosing timeless finishes.
I don't believe that's true. I think timeless homes are created by making timeless decisions!
One of the biggest misconceptions about design is that beautiful spaces come from selecting beautiful things.
In reality, great design happens long before those decisions are made.
It begins with principles.
Principles don't go out of style.
Trends do.
Over the years, I've found myself relying on the same design principles over and over again. Not because they're popular, but because they continue to create spaces that feel balanced, comfortable, and beautifully resolved.
Proportion
Every room has a natural rhythm.
When furniture is scaled correctly and architectural elements feel balanced, the room becomes effortless to experience.
You don't notice the proportion when it's right.
You only notice it when it's wrong.
Restraint
One of the hardest lessons in design is knowing when to stop.
Luxury isn't filling every corner.
It's having the confidence to leave space for the eye to rest.
Some of the most beautiful homes I've ever designed weren't the ones with the most things.
They were the ones where every piece had purpose.
Contrast
Rooms become interesting through contrast.
Soft textures against structured lines.
Warm materials beside cooler finishes.
Old beside new.
Contrast creates depth without creating chaos.
Intentionality
Every decision should support the next.
Nothing should feel random.
When lighting, furniture, materials, art, and architecture begin working together, the room stops feeling decorated. It starts feeling complete.
This is why I don't spend much time chasing trends.
They're fun.
They're inspiring.
They're temporary.
I'd rather create spaces that still feel beautiful ten or twenty years from now because they're rooted in something deeper.
What feels balanced, authentic and human.
