The People Behind a Beautiful Home

We spend a lot of time talking about what goes into a beautiful home.

The architecture.
The materials.
The furniture.
The lighting.

However, after years of working in design and construction, I’ve realized some of the most important elements of a successful project never appear in the photographs.

A beautiful project might involve a designer, architect, builder, cabinetmaker, stone fabricator, electrician, painter, installer, and a client who ultimately has to trust all of those people with their home.

What makes a project successful isn't simply that everyone is talented.

It's that everyone is working toward the same vision.

Over the years, I’ve found that the best projects share a few things:

Trust.
The client needs to trust the team, but the team also needs to trust one another's expertise. When that trust exists, people are able to do their best work.

Communication.
Hundreds—sometimes thousands of decisions happen throughout a project. The finished home feels cohesive when those decisions aren't being made in isolation.

Craftsmanship.
You can select the most beautiful stone in the world, but someone still has to template it, fabricate it, install it, and care about how every one of those details comes together.

I’ve come to realize that a large part of my job isn't simply designing the space.

It's protecting the vision as it moves through many different hands.

Making sure that all of those individual decisions continue to reference one another and tell the same story.

When you walk into a beautifully finished home, you may never know how many people touched it along the way.

You won't hear the conversations.

You won't see the problems that were solved.

You won't know which details were debated, revised, rebuilt, or protected.

You'll simply feel that everything belongs.

Perhaps that's the greatest compliment to all of the people behind a beautiful home.
